L-Theanine is a nonessential amino acid that acts to relax the brain without causing sedation. It is naturally found in both green and black tea, where it helps to "take the edge off" of the stimulating properties of tea's natural caffeine content.

In terms of its effect on the brain, it may help to mildly boost the neurotransmitters GABA, serotonin and dopamine. It may also increase alpha brain wave activity in the brain which is associated with "wakeful relaxation".
